London Aug 18 Sir John French reports no infantry actions since the Hooge trench capture on August 10 with occasional artillery exchanges along the west front. British submarines penetrated the Dardanelles and the Turkish army remains in a very critical condition.
Paris reports an official account of mining activity on the western front. It notes fierce clashes in Artois and Champagne and in La Louvière, with German advances repulsed. Mines continue to shape battles in Vosges Argonne and at Sondenach Ridge, while Beuvrages and nearby shipping works see shell explosions. J BE Oppenheimer arrived from Rocher de Boule mine last evening.
Millions of dollars in property destroyed by the tropical hurricane that hit Galveston and nearby areas. The same storm brought water shortages and added inconvenience to residents as reports continue on further damage and ongoing relief efforts.
Coroner's jury concluded the inquest into John Pitman's death at Port Hssington. The open verdict fixed no individual with the crime and stated he died from a neck wound causing a hemorrhage from a sharp instrument.
Stipendary Magistrate McMullin nears conclusion of preliminary Port Essington murder hearing with Murphy’s testimony postponed due to illness. Testimony details include Ohara Nagano Carlson Pitman and Pitman’s fatal wounds, with multiple witnesses describing knife and fist attacks at the Oriental Cafe and nearby steps.
Athens reports two more British submarines penetrated the Dardanelles and entered the Sea of Marmara, hindering revictualing of Turkish forces at Gallipoli as the Turkish position there grows critical. British gains are reported near a Turkish trench while Australian forces repel attacks with little change in diplomacy. General Sir Ian Hamilton and Greece are noted in the evolving situation.
The Local Horticultural Society held a post noon flower show in the Board of Trade Rooms. Despite fewer entrants, quality was praised with numerous prize winners led by Mrs. T McClymont, Mrs. W T Kirkpatrick, and M M Stephens across multiple categories including Begonia, Geraniums, Pelargoniums, Nasturtiums, ferns, and cut flowers.
A Idaho fishing boat arrived Tuesday with 30,000 pounds of halibut and sold the catch yesterday to Rorvik Fish Company. The price fetched was five and five-eighth cents per pound.
