Eastern Front News Holds Steady as Russians Stand Firm

Ottawa reports little change on the eastern front with Russian resistance holding. An eastern regiment of pioneers for active service has been ordered and Col. W Mahlon Davis of the 54th Regiment in Vernon is offered command. The Canadian Fish & Cold Storage Company plans a reading room for Seal Cove workers as part of employee welfare. Salmon pack for the season is expected to match average levels with early results from Alert Bay north.

Hazelton Wins Baseball Match 5 1 Over Prince Rupert

Hazelton team defeated Prince Rupert 5 to 1 in an Aug. 14 game. The match ended in the seventh inning due to darkness. Prince Rupert pitcher Hunt and catcher Hannifin faced Hazelton, while Rock and Donnelly comprised the Hazelton battery.

Russians Hold Ground Against Germans in Several Fronts

Petrograd reports no essential changes in Riga region, with enemy counter attacks near Jacobstadt, Dyinsk and Vilko mir repelled. Front between Narew and Bug rivers shows no major shift, while skirmishes occur near Novogeorgievsk and near the Bug’s left bank. Paris reports a German plan to raid the Suez Canal was frustrated by a French cruiser on August 12. The cruiser bombarded Jaffa factories where arms munitions and boats were under construction as preparation for the attack. Jaffa inhabitants were warned of the bombardment.
