In Philadelphia on December 6 a stray or domestic dog named Gyp alerted and helped rescue seven members of Patrick Riley's family from a Lenadowne home fire. The dog jumped on Thomas Riley's bed waking him and barking loudly as flames spread. The eldest son escaped via a second floor and ladder. He then assisted his parents and siblings who were overcome by smoke. The family was guided to safety on the roof before the fire department arrived.
