Origin of Boise Name and Early Idaho City Facts

The Boise name arose from a French explorers exclamation about cottonwoods seen in the Boise valley. The river was Reed river, and Boise basin and Boise valley terms spread to the Snake River region. In 1863 United States cavalry camped on Government Island and Boise barracks site was chosen, followed by the founding of Boise City led by John A. O Farrell, with the O Farrell cabin still standing today. Early settlers moved into tents and simple shelters after surveying.
