Turkey Crop Nearly Doubles From Last Year

U.S. turkey production for 1949 reaches 41.107 million birds, 29 percent above 1948 and second only to the 1945 record. The rise follows three years of declines and reflects renewed producer interest amid a recovering market and lower feed costs, though poults faced higher losses in many states.

Grain With Roughage Increases Milk Production

Dairy expert R H Ross of the University of Idaho reports that cows fed grain along with roughage produce about 20 percent more milk. He notes alfalfa hay lacks energy and recommends a home grown grain bran mix with added minerals and iodized salt. Winter silage and root crops like beet pulp can supplement feed when cows are off pasture.
