Preston Lumber Co. unveils a modern 42 by 66 foot store and office building with a 17 by 180 foot warehouse as it plans a grand opening around October 1 to showcase the new facilities. Floyd Diderickson and crew moved into the new quarters last week.
At a Monday board meeting Dr. Newel G. Davies resigned from the Preston Chamber of Commerce and Don E. Smith, editor and publisher of The Preston Citizen, was appointed as his replacement. The motion followed Davies statement that he is moving from Preston and that a new director would aid the chamber in its operation. The article notes the chamber won first prize for floats in Montpelier Downey parades and quotes secretary Rulon Dinh praising the float.
A telephone company reports cables shot by a high powered rifle on Thatcher A road causing about 40 phones to be out of service for hours. Maintenance crews restored service by 9 pm. On Labor Day at Riverdale a separate cable segment was cut leaving five customers without service until the next day, likely from dove hunters on the highway.
Franklin County Fish and Game Association reports 386 094 fish planted across nine streams and reservoirs in the county this year. They also released 700 pheasants, 400 east of Bear River and 300 west of the river.
Sheriff's report states several sheep wandered onto Highway 91 north of Preston Seraedeye. Two Kendall cars struck four sheep, killing two and injuring two occupants. A Franklin county woman and two others were hospitalized for bruises and shock. a year old child escaped injury. Sheriff Ray Talbot investigated.
Mrs. Jesper Rasmussen of Weston caught a 26 pound salmon on Saturday September 1 in the Salmon River. The proud angler noted the big catch as a highlight of the outing.
Jack Kennard, formerly with the Soil Conservation Service at Montpelier, is transferred to Preston to replace Jack Harwood as work unit supervisor. Harwood moves to Blackfoot. Kennard bought the Karl Ballif home in Preston and moved his family there. George Barfis is assigned to work with him. The 21 member Soil Conservation District board includes Stanton Hawkes and others.
The Weston ward softball team won the all church junior tournament for the fourth straight year with a strong 9 to 0 victory over Praknton ward for the stake championship and 10-5 over Providence ward. They posted 12-4 and 8-1 wins, finished 10th overall among 32 teams, and lost consolation final to Menan 10-4.
The Citizen reports last week’s fat stock sale in Franklin County with buyers and prices for beef, lambs, and hogs. Notable entries include Kathleen Carver at 100 pounds prime, Walt Lovell and sons at 23.50 per cwt, Carver 105 pounds choice at 19.50, Bruce Jepsen 105 pounds choice, and Bat Hogan 1168 at 24.15 per cwt, with continued figures on page C2.
Malad will host the annual American Legion and Auxiliary Fifth District Fall Convention on Saturday. About 150 delegates from posts including Aberdeen, Amer ican Falls, Bancroft, Blackfoot, Downey, Grace, Lava Hot Springs, Malad City, Montpelier, Paris, Pocatello No. 4 and Preston are expected. A school of instruction, parade, joint Legion Auxiliary event, banquets, and a dance follow a morning registration and district officials will attend.
The Midvale Utah based Chansonettes Louise Johnson Julie Simmons and Janet Knudson won in the local girls trio tryouts and will compete again Sunday on the Ted Mack amateur hour from New York City. Local residents are urged to vote by mailing a card with name and address to Harvest Days Midvale Utah.

Wise attended radio school in New Jersey for eight months before deployment and is now stationed in Panama working on micro radio wave sets. A Franklin ward roadshow heads to Fairview Weston Whitney and Franklin stakehouses with a series of proverb themed acts. Performances begin at 1 30 p m and invite the public to attend as sixth ward promises line up of dances songs and costumes from Puritans to the modern era.
North Cache Bulldogs defeated the Preston Indians 20 to 0 in the opening game at Preston City Recreation Park. The hosts showed pass defense weakness early, allowing all points in the first half while the second half saw tighter defense and no scoring by North Cache.
Navy Commander Thomas Robinson, son of Mrs. T A Robinson of Preston, is reported to be attending the naval war college at Newport Rhode Island. He serves as operations officer with the staff of a carrier division and is among those receiving advanced training as part of wartime staff education.
Joseph Lyman Smith, 62, of Pocatel lo, was found dead in his overturned car along the Twin Lakes canal about 10 miles north and three miles east of Preston. He had been picnicking with companions at Condie reservoir near Winder. the crash occurred around 2:45 p.m. as his car plunged down a 20 foot embankment into four feet of water. Survived by his wife Hortense and five children.
Drawings were held September 1 by the Idaho Fish and Game Dept for two hunts, deer draw 104 and 105, with 379 complete applications for hunt 104. Winners from Franklin County include George Vi Hansen Wes ton David J L Keller Hubb Larsen Sone wletve to TAC. Other Preston residents named among winners and applicants.
The ASC state office in Boise announces an extension for the 1957 acreage reserve program. Farmers wanting to participate now have until October 5 to sign agreements, replacing the former September 21 deadline. The program operates on a first come first served basis and local county ASC offices should be contacted promptly.
The Presto Fire Department was called to a fire at the Allen Fisher farm near high noon on Saturday. Quick action by firefighters saved a milk barn and two bale stacks of hay, though the origin of the blaze remains undetermined.
State Senator Heath addresses Preston-Whitney Irrigation stockholders urging new storage.
