Jean Smith Leads Far East Wheat Observation Tour

Franklin County farmer Jean Smith of Riverdale will join a five man Western Wheat Associates team on a month long mission to the Far East. The Idaho Wheat Commission chair travels with team members from Washington Nebraska Oklahoma and the U S to observe storage milling and use of wheat by Asian customers. The trip runs from Washington DC to London New Delhi Bangkok Singapore Jakarta Manila Hong Kong Taipei Seoul Osaka Tokyo and back to San Francisco December 2 with aim to deepen trade relations and study export markets.

Public hearing on abandoning State Highway 34 in Idaho

A public hearing is set in the District Courtroom of the Franklin County Courthouse next Wednesday at 7 30 p m concerning abandoning Highway 34 from the state line to Highway 91. Preston city limits include eight-tenths of a mile, with 5.6 miles in the county. Idaho Transportation Board secretary H L Day invites public input, oral and written, at the hearing and by November 10 in Boise.

McClure to speak at Franklin County Farm Bureau dinner

U S Senator James A McClure will be guest speaker at the Franklin County Farm Bureau dinner next Thursday at the Preston North Stake Center. Dinner starts at 8 p.m. County president Doug Forsgren notes non members may attend by contacting Forsgren Scott Christensen or Frank and Susan Priestley.

Use of Legion building still up in air

Franklin County's Board of Commissioners held a special meeting to discuss the future use of the American Legion Hall deeded to the War Memorial Commission. The hearing featured Bill Auger and Roy Sorensen arguing over governance and funding while Senior Citizens described repairs and expansion needs. A November 14 War Memorial Commission meeting will decide the path forward with veterans groups, the press, and civic leaders.

County curfew to start Monday Halloween enforcement

Sheriff Arlando Larsen announced the county will enforce the new curfew ordinance on Halloween. Youths under 17 must be home by 11 p m on weeknights and 1 a m on weekends, with parents notified if they are picked up. Arson and vandalism penalties cover dumpster fires and egg throwing under state codes.
