The Preston chapter of Future Farmers of America placed second at an FFA judging contest held by the Southeastern Idaho district. The event drew about eight chapters and 22 teams.

Former Local Girl Wins Golf Trophy at Burley Meet

Sergene Sorenson of Preston won the championship trophy at the Minidoka Cassia County Women’s Golf Meet held in Burley. In the first round she defeated Pat Burke, then beat Vivian Pace in the second, and edged Ella Annest in the final round with a birdie on the 9th hole to secure the title. Sorenson is the daughter of Mr and Mrs Andra of 422 East Fourth South Preston.

Funeral services held for Lila Schvaneveldt at age 50

Lila Schvaneveldt died September 21 after a long illness at age 50. Funeral services were held September 25 in the Weston ward chapel conducted by Bishop Frank Olsen. Friends and relatives filled the chapel and recreation hall. music was provided by Gordon Simpson, party hall, Ells Thompson, Lois Nielsen and Weston singers.

Edgley was elected chairman of the Eastside school district board at the reorganizational meeting in September. New board members Woodrow Butterworth Franklin and Darrel R. Palmer Motor Implement Co in Preston has been appointed local IH dealer for the area. Dean and Leo Palmer, co managers, lead the firm as THC officials announce the move this week. Young Republicans Elect Nelson as New President

In Franklin County the Young Republican League held a meeting in the courthouse basement to elect new officers. Douglas Nelson of Mink Creek was chosen as chairman with Royce Fuhriman as vice chairman and Eliz Baird as secretary, replacing Ray Roghaar and Bud Thomas.

Veda Hansen Crockett Dies at Age 55 in Preston

Veda Hansen Crockett, 55, died at her Preston home Tuesday. She was born January 26, 1901, in Logan, daughter of Christian L. Hansen and Margaret Dunkey Hansen. She married E. Ray Crockett February 13, 1924, in the Logan LDS temple. Survivors include husband DeRay Crockett of Preston and daughter Joyce Nielsen of Wilmington. Continued on page 8.

Soils conservation district reports reservoirs boost irrigation efficiency

Franklin Soil Conservation District supervisors report that overnight storage reservoirs improve irrigation water use. Kennard noted records show SCS technicians have engineered land layouts for four reservoirs this year and several farmers including John Warrick and Lewis Bingham completed reservoirs. Federal cost sharing supports reservoir construction through the AC program. Bingham says the system stores water overnight and allows daytime irrigation, increasing overall efficiency.

Union Pacific seeks to discontinue Weston agency

The Union Pacific Railroad Co. filed with the Idaho Public Utilities Commission an application requesting permission to discontinue its agency at Weston in this county. The filing notes Weston is served by several hard surfaced highways and has access to for hire motor carrier services. Figures for 1953-54-55 and the first three months of the current year show railroad business volume during this period.

Noral Va Christensen Van Noy Dies at 83 in Preston

Noral Va Christensen Van Noy, 83, died at home in Preston Tuesday, after living in Preston five years. Born July 24, 1873, in Denmark, she was daughter of France and Katrina Larsen Fransen. She married Chris Christensen, later separated, then married Samuel Van Noy in 1906. he died in 1930. Survived by son Vern Ivry Christensen of Pocatello, daughter Lenna Peterson of Preston, sister Annie Weir of Preston, 10 grandchildren, 38 great grandchildren, and 12 great great grandchildren. Supt MW H Simmons announced this week that 4,897.2 pupils are registered in elementary and high schools in the Preston East Side district. Compared with last year, first grade 1,400 this year 1,352. grades nine through twelve 535 this year 545. total 1,935 this year 1,887. Preston Junior High lists 408 students with 117 in seventh grade 126 in eighth 165 in ninth. Preston High totals 380 with 153 sophomores 129 juniors 98 seniors. Named schools include Franklin Mink Creek Central Preston Riverdale Whitney and Winder with varied grade totals.

Nepal farm student to visit Treasureton and Franklin County

Franklin County Canning Center Gets New Juicer Equipment

The Franklin County Canning Center received a larger capacity juicer funded by Farm Bureau women and local patrons. The machine, installed in late August, handles up to 50 bushels of tomatoes per hour and can also make apple sauce, improving product quality by avoiding pre cooking. Funds are still being raised to finish the original project including a can conveying holist to ground level.
