Weather forecasts show October with above normal temperatures and below normal precipitation. J Thomas Heath of Franklin County Sugar Co urges beet growers to slow harvest pace to maximize growth and sugar content as six extra harvesters operate this fall with the same acreage to harvest.
The Preston chapter of Future Farmers of America placed second at an FFA judging contest held by the Southeastern Idaho district. The event drew about eight chapters and 22 teams.
Sergene Sorenson of Preston won the championship trophy at the Minidoka Cassia County Women’s Golf Meet held in Burley. In the first round she defeated Pat Burke, then beat Vivian Pace in the second, and edged Ella Annest in the final round with a birdie on the 9th hole to secure the title. Sorenson is the daughter of Mr and Mrs Andra of 422 East Fourth South Preston.
Lila Schvaneveldt died September 21 after a long illness at age 50. Funeral services were held September 25 in the Weston ward chapel conducted by Bishop Frank Olsen. Friends and relatives filled the chapel and recreation hall. music was provided by Gordon Simpson, party hall, Ells Thompson, Lois Nielsen and Weston singers.
Edgley was elected chairman of the Eastside school district board at the reorganizational meeting in September. New board members Woodrow Butterworth Franklin and Darrel R. Wold Riverdale attended their first meeting. Dr. 2.0 R R Gitler was elected treasurer and Howard Swairiston Whitney Jr. filled the other seat.
Palmer Motor Implement Co in Preston has been appointed local IH dealer for the area. Dean and Leo Palmer, co managers, lead the firm as THC officials announce the move this week. The Palmer firm already runs a large parts department and will stock tractors harvesters balers beet harvesters and tillage equipment.
In a nationwide unveil, Ford Motor Co displays two size families Fairlane and Custom plus station wagon series for 1957. Ford officials claim the line offers the highest performance engines in the low price field with Fairlane 500 models adding extra tuxary features. G W McCune owner Preston Ford invites customers to visit local showroom to see the big change in Ford’s modern history.
In Franklin County the Young Republican League held a meeting in the courthouse basement to elect new officers. Douglas Nelson of Mink Creek was chosen as chairman with Royce Fuhriman as vice chairman and Eliz Baird as secretary, replacing Ray Roghaar and Bud Thomas.
Veda Hansen Crockett, 55, died at her Preston home Tuesday. She was born January 26, 1901, in Logan, daughter of Christian L. Hansen and Margaret Dunkey Hansen. She married E. Ray Crockett February 13, 1924, in the Logan LDS temple. Survivors include husband DeRay Crockett of Preston and daughter Joyce Nielsen of Wilmington. Continued on page 8.
Franklin Soil Conservation District supervisors report that overnight storage reservoirs improve irrigation water use. Kennard noted records show SCS technicians have engineered land layouts for four reservoirs this year and several farmers including John Warrick and Lewis Bingham completed reservoirs. Federal cost sharing supports reservoir construction through the AC program. Bingham says the system stores water overnight and allows daytime irrigation, increasing overall efficiency.
Glenn L Hansen 40 a Preston resident died at his home in Blackfoot Saturday after a brief illness He was born May 10 1907 in Preston son of Loreno E Hansen and Maude Bosworth Hansen He lived in Blackfoot the past five years and was a painter interior decorator by trade He married Lucretia Evans who died earlier he later married Ella Farnes on Nov 1 1945 in San Francisco Surviving are his widow Glenn L Jr of Blackfoot his parents of Preston six brothers and sisters J Kimber Preston LaMarr Blackfoot Mrs Walter Marr Omaha NE Mrs Lynn Petterberg Phoenix AZ Mrs Russell Crockett Salt Lake City and Mrs Paul Nedra Potter Salt Lake City Funeral services were held Tuesday at 2 pm in the Preston second ward chapel conducted by Bishop Orval Draper
West Side High School outlines a busy year with students and officers guiding activities. Robert Schwartz serves as president and leads a team including Karen Balls vice president Joye McKay secretary Jerry Johnson reporters Jane Olsen and Stan Hansen in coordinating clubs, publications, and yearbook efforts.
The Union Pacific Railroad Co. filed with the Idaho Public Utilities Commission an application requesting permission to discontinue its agency at Weston in this county. The filing notes Weston is served by several hard surfaced highways and has access to for hire motor carrier services. Figures for 1953-54-55 and the first three months of the current year show railroad business volume during this period.
Noral Va Christensen Van Noy, 83, died at home in Preston Tuesday, after living in Preston five years. Born July 24, 1873, in Denmark, she was daughter of France and Katrina Larsen Fransen. She married Chris Christensen, later separated, then married Samuel Van Noy in 1906. he died in 1930. Survived by son Vern Ivry Christensen of Pocatello, daughter Lenna Peterson of Preston, sister Annie Weir of Preston, 10 grandchildren, 38 great grandchildren, and 12 great great grandchildren. Funeral services will be at Webb Mortuary Friday. viewing Thursday evening and Friday until service. Burial in Richmond Cemetery.
Supt MW H Simmons announced this week that 4,897.2 pupils are registered in elementary and high schools in the Preston East Side district. Compared with last year, first grade 1,400 this year 1,352. grades nine through twelve 535 this year 545. total 1,935 this year 1,887. Preston Junior High lists 408 students with 117 in seventh grade 126 in eighth 165 in ninth. Preston High totals 380 with 153 sophomores 129 juniors 98 seniors. Named schools include Franklin Mink Creek Central Preston Riverdale Whitney and Winder with varied grade totals.
Ishwar S from Nepal will visit Treasureton Oct 1 13 as part of an international farm youth exchange. The program, sponsored by the US Department of Agriculture and 4 H, aims to share Nepalese agriculture and customs. Daniel Roberts, county agent, will coordinate activities and arrange reports for groups seeking involvement.
The Franklin County Canning Center received a larger capacity juicer funded by Farm Bureau women and local patrons. The machine, installed in late August, handles up to 50 bushels of tomatoes per hour and can also make apple sauce, improving product quality by avoiding pre cooking. Funds are still being raised to finish the original project including a can conveying holist to ground level.
General conference sessions are set for October with broadcasts by KPST radio from Salt Lake City tabernacle. Oneida stakehouse and nearby stakes are urged to attend the priesthood meeting, with Franklin stake and others invited to participate via direct-wire telecast and radio notices.
Branlelin youth Joseph Stokes, stationed at San Antonio Texas, visited Ogden with his parents to see the largest plane of Force on display during the opening ceremonies of Hill AFB's new Tunway. He is among 14 men on the XC G-89 aircraft display crew.
The 1954 census lists green pea harvesting across the United States with 385,507 acres total. Walla Walla County Washington ranks second with 16,430 acres, Columbia Washington third with 14,755, and Dodge Wisconsin fourth with 13,172. Idaho shows three counties among the top 100, Franklin with 7,643 acres ranking eighth, Lewis with 1,696 ranking 48th, and Franklin again with 779 acres ranking 95th.
Albert Evigene Goodsell aged 72 died at his Weston home after illness. He married Annie Melissa Hoopes in Logan temple on April 16 1903. Survived by eight children and 32 grandchildren, plus siblings. Funeral 2 p.m. Saturday at Weston ward chapel with viewing Friday evening and Saturday morning. burial Weston cemetery under Webb mortuary.

She teaches first grade at Central. Ross Bowman senior at USAC. Joan Going Rexburg Rexby teaching second grade at Central. Shev Goines Rexburg teaching first year at Central. LaVerne Judy from Ogden teaching second grade at Jefferson. Mrs Moser Preston High School graduate teaching fourth grade at Jefferson. June Grier Springville English junior high with art classes. Winona Ramage Cedar City High School graduate Utah State Agricultural College teaching girls physical education at Preston Junior High.
The Cleveland cemetery installs a lawn sprinkling system for lots this fall. Owners may plant lawn and are asked to clean their own lots starting this Friday and anytime thereafter.
The Jefferson P T A sponsors the first meeting of the 1956 1957 season to be held Friday at 8 p m in Preston High School auditorium. A panel discussion on county legislation will feature local candidates for state representative and state senator with Dana Muirz as moderator. The public is invited.
