City Again Denied EDA Funds For Water Line Project

A 3,500 population city reported at the recent council meeting that its request for $300,000 in Economic Development Administration funds to finance a new water line was turned down despite repeated applications and encouragement from federal offices. Senator Frank Church and Congressman George Hansen sent regrets, urging reapplication via HUD. The council criticized changing qualifying criteria and the recurring wait for promised help, noting four Northern Idaho cities received state shares.

Eastside School Board adopts non-discriminatory program and policy

Eastside Board amended the high school tardy policy, adopted the Title Nine affirmative action program, and approved substitute teacher pay. Elizabeth McGrew was named district affirmative action director to implement the program. A student was suspended for habitual truancy but allowed to pursue correspondence courses to meet graduation requirements. The meeting also approved building fund funding from Central School sale, signed a building contract with Stettler Construction, and discussed a federal grant for Franklin’s water system.

Jehovah's Witnesses Set Hall Dedication at Preston

The Preston Congregation of Jehovah's Witnesses hosts a weekend of events for the new hall with an open house Saturday from 10 am to 3 pm and a dedication Sunday at 9 30 am. D Krebbs of the Watchtower Society will speak and present local history and building slides.

Hobbs Purchases Preston Lumber Company

W Kent Hobbs and his wife Delorees have purchased the Preston Lumber Company from Mr. and Mrs. R. J. McCaslin of Boise. The sale took effect November 1 and preserves local ownership with staff and operations remaining steady while inventory may increase to meet demand.

Christmas Lights Fun In Preston Opens Season

Chamber officials Doug Webb and Craig Allred announce Preston’s Christmas season. On Friday Nov 28 the City Center Park Mall hosts music from 4 30 p m Santa lights the tree at 5 p m then hands out treats until 530 p m. Stores stay open to 8 p m. Santa visits Dec 13 photo day and Dec 20 order day with a Grand Theatre matinee.

Turkey Dinner for Seniors at Preston Legion Hall

Seniors dinner scheduled Saturday at the Senior Citizen Center in the American Legion Hall Preston. The noon event features a full turkey meal with trimmings, a program, and prizes. Admission is $1, and attendees should bring their own plates and utensils.

Brucellosis testing underway in Preston Idaho

Dr Cecil Watson district veterinarian for Idaho with US Department of Agriculture reports brucellosis testing progress in Preston last Thursday. He cites a team led by Dr Richard Hobbs of Preston and Delbert Frazier of Medford Oregon, with Frazier setting up HQ at Howell Motel and handling reports of suspect herds. Program expected to last at least six months.

Paul Bott to Speak at Preston South Stake Conference

Paul Wesley Bott regional representative of the LDS Church will speak at the Preston South Stake conference. A Saturday 4 p.m. leadership session and a Sunday 10 a.m. general session are planned with public invited to attend the Sunday meeting. Bott, born in 1919 in Ogden, is married to Avon Barrett and has three sons and a daughter. He has held many church leadership roles and previously served in the Eastern States Mission.

Mayor Proclaims Auxiliary Week for Franklin County Hospital

Mayor Lyle Shipley designates December 17 as Franklin County Hospital Nursing Home Auxiliary Week to promote membership and raise funds. At a recent meeting, Lorraine Deats reported gift show progress, Shirley Saxton spoke on a gift cart, LaVene Cole discussed a book mobile cart, and donations of books and magazines were received. The next Auxiliary meeting is Thursday December 4 at 10 am at the hospital.
