Preston Hosts Postponed Parking Meter Funeral Day

The town of Preston sets a Saturday event with dozens of money saving bargains. Dan Valentine will deliver the eulogy marking the passing of parking meters. Prizes include an Oldsmobile from Cranney Chevrolet and a Wyler watch dropped from 1000 feet by T. C. Merrill and Sons.

Cancer Society Reaches Goal In Idaho Drive

The Idaho division American Cancer Society completed its annual fund and education drive with Franklin county first to meet its goal. Total county collection was 1992.39 dollars, aided by memorial gifts totaling 19 dollars. Volunteers distributed literature stressing early diagnosis and regular medical checkups. District leaders and ward totals are listed, with Preston wards reporting amounts from 69 to 209 dollars.

Polio Vaccine Now Available for Ages 1 to 19

State polio serum is available for ages one through nineteen at two dollars per shot. Commercial serum is offered to adults at three dollars per shot. Interested individuals should contact their family physician.

Beet Thinning At Peak Says Heath in 1944 Franklin County Ad

Beet thinning is at its peak in Franklin County as Tom Heath general manager of the Franklin County Sugar Co urges growers to help the beet thinners. Heath notes this year is earlier than 1943 with many acres thinned soon and labor is scarce. Local youth and older volunteers are called to assist as beets ripen together.

First Security Bank to Close Saturdays in Summer

The First Security Bank of Preston announces it will close every Saturday during June July and August in compliance with Idaho state law. Doors will remain shut on Saturdays throughout the three months.

Hail Last Week Ravages West Side Strip

A severe hail storm ripped through the west side, cutting a six mile wide path from Clifton to Swan Lake and reaching Cleveland. Farmers suffered thousands in losses as crops including wheat were damaged. A separate heavy rainstorm occurred later with no hail reported.

Program Planned for Shut-Ins Day

National Shut-ins day will be observed Sunday with a local radio program on KPST at 2 p.m. Mrs. Olive Erickson announced the plan to boost morale for shut-ins and urged local residents to visit those unable to get about.

Preston High Band Prepares for Centennial Parade Season

The Preston High School band, led by drum major Tim Hobbs and majorette Ruth Ann Durrant, plans a busy summer of parades and rodeo celebrations in Cache Valley. They start June 15 at Franklin Idaho Day, perform in Logan on July 4, and join Ogden Pioneer Days before leading Preston’s night rodeo parade July 26–28. The group is one of 12 top bands chosen, with the baton corps and cadet bands supporting their performances.
