Graduation exercises will be held Wednesday May 25 at 8 p.m. in the Preston high school auditorium. LeGrand Richards from the Council of the Twelve of the LDS church will be the main speaker. One hundred twenty three graduates will receive their blue and white caps and gowns.
The 33rd annual Preston LDS Seminary commencement program is set for tomorrow evening at Franklin stakehouse starting at 3 o clock. Clark Johnson presides with addresses by Darrelyn Owens and Darrel G Gamble. The event includes the Girls sextet The Temple by the River and ends with diplomas awarded by Wilford W Sagers and a benediction by Stake Pres Shirley Pal.
The FHA banquet held Thursday May 5 featured Marie Orne as new president. Guests included Jean Gassman and Pauline Smith with piano solos and a guest speaker Miss Gilmore from the home economics department at USAC. Officers were announced and degrees enacted for several members.
The recreation program for the season plans softball and league play at local parks. Highlights include Oneda stake senior league Monday night games, Bill's Texeco vs Downey at Franklin, and junior teams starting midweek.
The five-mill levy plan was presented at the May budget hearing for the next school year. The proposed budget requests 447,732 dollars in expenditures with 448,073 dollars in anticipated revenue, requiring a five-mill levy rather than the three mills used in previous years. Voting will be at existing polling places for Fairview, Franklin, Whitney, Mink Creek, Riverdale, Winder, and Jefferson. polls open 1 p.m. to 8 p.m. with a simple majority needed to pass.
West Side High School elects Gary Porter as student body president for the coming year. Porter, a senior basketball player and football participant, also served as junior yearbook business manager. Margaret Beiter is secretary. Other officers include Richard Hobbs as social reader and Carmen Balls as advertising manager.
Franklin ward chapel hosts the Franklin eighth grade commencement exercises with Wayne Corbridge giving the welcome, Janet Fuhriman and Richard Porter offering prayers, and the class performing music and a quartet.
West Side High School holds commencement exercises at Weston Ward Chapel on May 25. A class of 38 graduates will participate featuring processional Pomp and Circumstance, invocation by William McKay, senior girls sextet, welcome by senior class president Stephen Bastian, and performances by Karen Nielsen Sharron Walker Lyle Henderson Narveen Kofoed and others. Supt. Keith Brimhall presents diplomas. presiding bishop Carl W. Beuhner delivers benediction.
Franklin Junior Oliverson from USAC named queen in a community pageant at Franklin with É Vatinda also recognized.
Preston merchants advertise a two day Crazy Duds promotion with about 25 prizes offered. The citizen issue mails to Franklin county homes promoting money saving bargains across 18 pages of ads. A parade leads to a free show at Isis theatre with prizes such as a John Deere tractor and grocery credits.
Only 637 voters took part in Eastside school district ballot on Monday regarding issuing 180000 in bonds to finish the high school project. Of those, 396 supported the proposal and 241 opposed, failing to reach the required two thirds. turnout by townships including Baytoy Pee g Whitnay and Winder showed mixed results with small yes and no tallies.
West Side High plans a Chapel Baccalaureate Sunday at 2 PM in Clifton ward chapel. Edna Kofoed will lead organ interlude and processional, Carl Mortensen will give invocation, Alma Winward will sing I Walked in Gods Garden, Afton Affleck violin solo Janet Davis will introduce guest speaker Arlene Hatch, Wilfond Richards LDS seminary superintendent will speak, a vocal duet by Mr and Mrs Marion and a benediction by Raymond Hobbs, Edna Kofoad. Class advisers are Lyle Porter and Leonard Johnson.
