Reserve Unit Seeks Organizers In Preston Area

Air Force Reserve personnel in Preston urged to note that the 9431st Air Reserve Squadron in Pocatello is attempting to organize a flight. A minimum of ten members is needed. Pioneer couple to be honored at Swan Lake Ward program

The Swan Lake ward of the LDS church will honor Mr. and Mrs. Gambles, lifelong residents of Swan Lake, at a Mother's Day program. William Gambles, 86, born March 24, 1868, and Louisay Nellie Crowshaw Gambles, 83, born Aug 14, 1871, married Aug 25, 1890. Both active in church work for decades.

Lions Art Winner Jay Nielson Tops Local Contest

Jay Nielson son of Mrs Carl Nielson won first prize for artwork at the Lions annual art contest held last week in the courthouse. Glen Edwards of Preston took second place Frances Atkinson of West Side High School won third. Jes sie Larson of USAC art department served as judge. Paintings by USAC and department students were on display. A large crowd attended with interest shown in both Preston and West Side high schools. Reed Maglepy Wayne Brown and Del Rosen led the event.

Radar Division Signal Corps Graduate Free From Idaho State College

Private Wayne Goff completes a 24 week radar division signal corps course at Monmouth Nevada after attending Idaho State College. He is reassigned to army field forces to utilize his radar and electronic fire control training under combat conditions. Noted Violinist Harding Delights Preston High Audience

Joseph Harding, famed violinist, entertained students at Preston High School last Thursday. Born in Omaha Neb at age 10 he began a public career, studied in Kansas City, won Lyon and Healy prize, performed with the Chicago Symphony under Fred Stock, Paris debut in 1930, then solo appearances with Paris Symphony. He toured France Germany Switzerland Italy and later served three years as concert master with the Kansas City Philharmonic.

John Thompson Sparks Dies After Head Wound in Banida Garage

John Thompson Sparks 51 or 52, of Banida, died Saturday morning nine hours after a head wound from a gunshot fired about 7:15 PM Friday in a Banida garage. Born August 2, 1902 in Clarkston Utah, he married Annie Griffeths in 1922 and lived in Clarkston, Rupert, then Banida. Survived by wife Annie and children Vere Preston Anna Ana William David Clarence Farrell John Mervin and Carol Jean, plus brothers William H Sparks and others. Burial was in Clarkston cemetery with services held at the Banida ward chapel.

Haworth Lands on Iwo Jima Marine Dies in WWII Battle

Gary A Haworth son of Mr and Mrs James H Haworth of Route 33 Preston landed on Iwo Jima with the Third Marine Division during World War II. Marines and sailors who died in 1945 were honored at memorial services for more than 4 000 lost in the battle to seize the island and establish an American airbase.

Preston High School held student body elections after a week of vigorous campaigning. Three tickets competed for president and vice president with Steplen Hinckley and Jon Hyde earning top posts, while Carolyn Chadwick and RaNeel Aknudson won secretary and treasurer roles respectively.

Lieut Neuenswander Enrolled in Fort Lee Quartermaster Course

Lieut. Laver Neuenswander son of Arthur Neuenswander of Weston attends the associate quartermaster company officer course at Fort Lee Virginia. He graduated from Utah State College and entered active duty in February 1954. Over 15 weeks he studies unit organization supply depot operations company administration military law mess management and operations in theater of operations. Training includes weapons familiarization with rifle bayonet carbine rifle hand grenades rocket launcher and 30 and 50 cal machine guns. A field problem at AP Hill during the last week concludes the course.
