Postmaster H. M. Hart announced new mail schedules for outgoing mail starting this week in Preston. Outgoing mail leaves at 3 and 9 p m on all days except Sundays and holidays with a 4 a m option for east side Cache Valley Ogden and Salt Lake City. Incoming sorting times are 8 a m and 5 p m except Sundays with a 4 a m arrival for Ogden.
The Citi zen outlines May showings at the Grand Theatre including A Man Called Peter. An editorial in The Deseret News praises the film for portraying Peter Marshall and its uplifting biographical story while urging audiences to seek performances that are both desirable and wholesome.
West Side plans a scientific method test of musical ability for all students to guide instrument selection. Instruments may be rented for three months to determine best fits, with lessons supplied by the school. The program aims to place students in chairs in the regular band soon.
The Franklin village board reorganized on Tuesday evening at the village hall and appointed W P Waddoups as chairman of the board. Two new members Samuel R Handy and Merlin Anderson join, with Handy in charge of the park and Anderson and Douglas Neaes supervising streets and sidewalks. William Biggs named in charge of the water system.
Camille Robinson daughter of Mr and Mrs Floyd Robinson of Franklin was chosen by Preston High seniors as Hi Queen candidate. She will compete with other prep queens at Agathon day bee held this week at USAC. Recently she led school play as freshman, served as LDS seminary students body secretary, now leads marching corps, represented youth legislature in Boise, and edits the Blue and White school newspaper.
Daniel Swainston 58 of 72 street died in Preston hospital Tuesday evening from a heart ailment. Born March 6, 1897 in Whitney, he was son of George and Mary E. Frost Swainston. He married Rita Littledyke Oct. 2, 1925 in Salt Lake City and lived in Franklin County all his life. An active LDS church and civic worker, he served in Sunday school roles in Whitney Ward and was an elder in the Northwestern states 1916 to 1918. A Preston barber for years, he served on the Taaho state examining board for barbers ten years and as a special deputy sheriff ten years. He belonged to the Preston Boots and Saddle club. Survived by wife of Preston and two children Beverly Smith Ogden and Richard Swainston Preston, plus two grandchildren and brothers George R Swainston Morgan Parley Swainston, and sisters Janetta Swenson Preston Charles Swainston John E Swainston Howard Swainston. Leonard Davis son of Mrs Kiss won first prize for his art at the Lions Tart contest held last week. He received a new watch. David Hansen son of Mr and Mrs Hansen took second place and earned a pen and pencil set. The judging was by Prof Jessie Larson of USAC. The committee in charge included Jon Goff Keith Larson and Bob Acock.
Outgoing Mayor Rulon Dunn swore in Councilman O Webb as successor. Webb and his new council took over city governance at 8 30 pm. A E Hollingsworth and Keith Larson sworn in as council members. Evans to supervise street projects Hoggan in charge of parks recreation and library Larson heads water licenses and claims Hollingsworth supervises sewer sanitation Harold Campbell named police chief Goff retained as city clerk Benson retained as city treasurer.
Voting held yesterday for student offices at the high school ended with three ticket slates leading. Sugar Sete ticket lists Clark Johnson for president and Gale Moger as vice president, while Sincerely slate features Lynn Bennett for president and Grant Affleck for social manager.
An early Wednesday morning theft report states a 1954 model hardtop and convertible owned by Evan M Harris of 83 North Fourth West was taken from in front of his residence. The vehicle’s motor and bones decay appear noted in the fragment.
Franklin county reports its only polio patient, Dan Crane of Mink Creek, inoculated with Salk vaccine this morning. He remains in critical condition in a Salt Lake City hospital but showed improvement as he opened his eyes for the first time in three days.
The Franklin County camporee May 13 14 at Mink Creek ball park showcases scouting skills with a campfire Friday evening led by W S Geddes and Saturday judging of camping techniques. Ernest Eberhard chairs the event with patrols from nearly every district troop attending and inviting parents and public to observe.
Seventy five Preston High students attended the state music festival in Twin Falls last Thursday and Friday. The Boys chorus of 40 voices and the Boys quartet earned superior ratings. Quartet soloist Larry Smith received superior ratings for his baritone and saxophone solos. Other excellent ratings went to Gary Merrill Judy Baur Ruth Olson vocal solos, Carol Jorgensen piano solo, and Larry Benson clarinet solo.
The Preston boys defeated Blackfoot 9-3 in the season opener delayed by weather. Endlich struck out 15 of 30 faced, allowing one run on a single and a homer in the first inning. Hawkins pitched for Malad as the non league slate continued.
Preston Chamber of Commerce merchants committee plans Crazy 1 Duds promotion for Friday and Saturday May 20 and 21. Local businesses offer sales and a parade with costume prize categories. A parade at 10 a.m. Saturday through the business district precedes a free Isis Theatre show.
Larry Smith of Franklin won the Horace Baugh cup in the high school vocal contest held in the auditorium. judged by Rudolph Goransen of Idaho State College, the event marks the first winner since 1950.
The annual spring festival for local pupils will be held May 12 at City Park across Oneida Street from the school building. It starts at 1 30 pm with dancing and drills by children and a reception for parents. The Central School PTA will host punching and refreshments after the performance.
The Legion Auxiliary asks readers for information on seven past presidents from years 1826, 1829, 1832, 1837 and 1838. Mrs Auger requests anyone knowing the heads of the auxiliary in these years to call her at 203-2.
Stephen Hinckley son of Mr and Mrs Vern Hinckley of Fairview has won a $250 Standard Oil Company of California scholarship to the University of Idaho. He is active in FFA, served as Preston High School student leader, and will use the award toward 1955 56 college expenses while competing in judging contests and continuing vocational agricultural work.

The Eastside School District board schedules an annual budget hearing for Thursday May 12 at 8 p.m in room 102 of the high school. Everyone is invited to attend to learn how funds will be allocated and income projected. A copy of the proposed budget is available at the superintendent's office for review.
In Preston Tuesday afternoon two automobiles collided at an intersection. Estimated damage was about 500 dollars. Occupants Mrs Baxter and her daughter Cleone were injured along with Mrs Hansen and her daughter Judy and were treated at the scene.
The Franklin County Flower Garden Club will meet in the courthouse basement Monday at 8 PM. Local florist Nat Edwards will demonstrate making shuquets of summer blooms for members.
