Mystery Personality Contest Jackpot Grows in Preston

The Citizen reports Preston residents chase an 83 50 jackpot this week after William Shumway was named the mystery personality last issue. Clues include Clarkston birth, chamber secretary, tenor singing, Rotarian tenure, and 65 years in Preston. The contest runs 14 more weeks with no and all clues required.

Cancer Society Seeks Volunteers for County Chapter Roles

The American Cancer Society seeks volunteers for leadership in the Franklin County chapter. Positions include educational counselor crusade counselor co chairmen treasurer secretary and memorials chairman. Mrs Orson Bowler says help is needed and interested persons may call her.

Mystery Personality, A Longtime Preston Resident

William Peter Shumway born December 13 in Clarkston eighty nine years ago is noted as a longtime Preston resident. He worked 23 years as a collector for Utah Power and Light, served as Preston Rotary secretary for 13 years, led the Rotary Christmas program 35 years and chaired the Preston Chamber of Commerce for 13 years. He and his wife Louise Hobbs sang at about 1200 funerals and many church events. He led Franklin Stake MIA for seven years with counselors Ezra Taft Benson and Ona Hatch. He has lived in Preston 65 years at 50 South Second East and still drives his own car.

West Side to stage three act comedy Rest Assured

West Side high school plans a three act comedy Rest Assured directed by Mrs Colleen Durrant. The production runs March 30 31 in Porter Hall and follows Mr Morlock a money minded father who dreams a visit from the other world before learning life goes on.

Preston High Enters Plymouth Troubleshooting Contest

Preston High School will join 12 other Idaho schools in the 1971 Plymouth Troubleshooting Contest. The event occurs April 24 at Boise State College Boise with George Wilcox as automotive teacher and team leader. Each team includes two students, and emphasis this year focuses on both a written test and a car sabotage scenario.

More Pageant Entries Sought By Preston Lions Club

The Preston Lions Club invites more contestants to enter the Miss Franklin County Pageant and to attend the final Lions Charm School session this week. Several girls have registered as contestants. The final Charm School class, taught by Mrs. Notina Beesley of Weber, is open to anyone interested.

Kindergarten Registration Opens April at Eastside School

A kindergarten program is planned by the Eastside School District starting April 12 in high school rooms 103 and 106. Registration is available at Central School Office upstairs from 8:30 to 11:30 a.m. on eligible days with birth certificates or other evidence of eligibility.

Distribution Shelter Map Approved by County Commissioners

The county board of vesence commissioners approved a state Civil Defense shelter map to be delivered to ace Scouts homes next priority. Arlando Larsen, county civil defense leader, directs the project under a state program. The meeting also authorized liability insurance for county fire trucks and school bus control by Eastside district. Gene Larsen of Preston was named clerk of works for the new hospital complex under construction with $4000 in the contract. A trade with LaGrande Johnson Co. on road equipment was suggested on a temporary basis.

State Patrol Hires Wendell Gailey as Deputy

The appointment of Wendell Gailey, deputy sheriff, as a state patrol man was announced this week. The county commissioners approved the hiring of Mike McEnzie, a city patrolman, to succeed him on the recommendation of the sheriff.

Special Weed Meeting Near At Franklin County Fairgrounds

A special weed meeting is set for March 30 at 1 00 p m in the William Robinson Community Building at the Franklin County fairgrounds. Wen dell Bosworth and DeVere Tovey outline new Idaho weed law and control measures including winter annuals rye resistant weeds in winter grain weed control in alfalfa and soil type treatments.

Central Dispatching Service In Operation

Central Dispatching Service is in operation with a fire siren button and phone hookup. Dispatching for the sheriff's office Preston Police and Preston fire department now operates from the office with staff including Eva Merrill Etthel Johnson Dean Lloyd Jim Christensen Ralph Cole and Katherine Johnson. The county and city will share dispatch costs with the county paying half and the city half of the dispatching costs.

New School Advisory Tour Explores Site Options

The school advisory committee headed by Ross Rasmussen toured potential sites this week with the board and district staff. The group visited Prestor area routes along Eighth East and Fourth North to evaluate locations as a bond issue remains unchanged.

Preston Rotary Plans Radio Day Broadcast

The Preston Rotary Club will take over the Preston Radio Station on April 1 for the annual Rotary Radio Day. Broadcast runs from 6:30 a.m. to 10:30 p.m. Proceeds from much of the advertising sales will go to the club.
