Fort Snelling Forts and Founding on the Mississippi
The Fort Snelling tract ran nine miles along the Mississippi. Lieut. Pike paid 200 dollars for whisky and trinkets. Col. Henry Leavenworth and a small force began a camp by the Minnesota River in 1819. Fort St. Anthony grew across the river and a sawmill and flour mill powered by nearby falls. The fort was completed in 1825 under Col. Josiah Snelling and renamed in his honor by Gen. Winfield Scott. Fort Snelling then became a frontier hub for trappers, traders, explorers, and settlers.
