New Phosphate Prospecting Rules Announced By Udall
Secretary Udall announced new phosphate prospecting rules replacing the old noncompetitive leases with a permit lease system for federal lands. Two year permits cover up to 2560 acres with 25 cent annual rental per acre and a 10240 acre lease cap. Exclusive prospecting rights apply for the permit holder with possible extensions and leasing option if a valuable deposit is found. National production on federal lands reached about 1.4 million tons in 1960, up from 1959, with Idaho Montana and Florida contributing.
