Salt Needs of Dairy Cattle and Grain Storage Advice
Dairy experts discuss salt requirements for dairy cows noting Babcock’s guideline of 3 grams per 1000 pounds live weight and a 1400 pound cow needing about 2.5 ounces daily. They advise free access to salt and 1 per cent salt in the ration, with cups or blocks for easy intake, especially for calves and dry cows. The column also warns that grinding oats and corn months ahead causes rancidity and loss of feed quality, recommending fresh grinding.
