Alfalfa Roughage Prevents Anemia in Calves
University of Idaho nutritionist T. 5B. Keith states that plenty of alfalfa roughage early in life reduces calf anemia by supplying iron the milk lacks. Calves have iron reserves at birth that can run out during nursing, so solid roughage should be introduced as soon as they are ready. If anemia occurs, proper feeding can correct it by about three months old.
