West Side School District discussed a Department of Labor safety report at the January 8 meeting. The inspector cited insufficient fire escapes and locked exits, dangerous wiring, and uninspected boilers as hazards, with immediate violations including the need for a distinct fire alarm system separate from the class bell.
Preston High School will present the Broadway musical Guys and Dolls in the auditorium on February 13 and 14. Nearly 100 students participate in the production with RaNae Petersen as Sara Brown and Wayne Fellows as Sky Masterson. Mattinees run February 10-11.
The Idaho Public Utilities Commission granted Utah Power and Light a 22.7 percent rate rise, totaling about 47 million dollars, affecting roughly 32 000 Idaho customers. Residential bills rise about 22 percent with irrigation and commercial classes seeing larger hikes. Utah Power earns about 15 percent of its revenue from Idaho. The commission cited low rate base returns and approved new schedules forthcoming for各 customer classes.
Dr Orson Bowler of Eastside School District refutes a Utah Daily article alleging Playboy subscriptions at Preston High School. He says quotes were inaccurate and six magazines arrived under teachers names. the incident occurred last spring. A weather modification meeting in Preston today discusses pros and cons with officials from Utah State University and local groups.
Franklin County officials weighed a $6900 public defender budget amid doubts about population based costs. Judge Rasmussen and firm partner Pete McDermott explained the five-county contract spreads costs by population and use. Franklin County uses the service least. The panel approved current funding but debated tying future payments to actual use.
Mrs Wilma Griffeth of 120 State St Preston addressed the Preston City Council during the monthly meeting. She presented an article from the National Enquirer quoting physicians opposing chlorine in drinking water. Council members noted mixed views as health officials stated tests are underway.
Idaho Construction Report shows December 1974 building activity at $69,500 for Preston with $1,500 in alterations and repairs, up from $3,000 the prior year. Full 1974 totals reach $1,516,479 statewide with $545,429 new residential, $903,800 nonresidential, and $63,250 alterations. Southeastern division notes Pocatello at $21 million, Burley $57 million, Rupert $29 million. state December totals $18.5 million and full 1974 at $2159 million, a 299 percent rise from 1973.
Del Monte Corporation announces a series of promotions at its Franklin and Smithfield plants. Michael O. Etcheverry rises from general foreman to overall field superintendent for Cache Valley. Albert P. Moulton becomes assistant superintendent at Franklin. Clarence R. Hall moves to general supervisor at Smithfield. Malcolm L. Wagstaff is shifted to shift supervisor at Franklin. Takenobu Horiuchi will become assistant field superintendent for Cache Valley in the newly created post at Smithfield.
State Department of Water Resources representatives are to arrive in Preston on January 27 to begin adjudication procedures for Worm Creek. The hearing follows a 1971 civil suit by Worm Creek drainage users in Franklin County for irrigation. The proceeding will determine all water rights and claims to Worm Creek and its tributaries.
Boise Rep Angus Condie reported that the Idaho State Land Department received a request to buy 80 acres atop Lookout Mountain also called Mt Bonneville near Franklin County The state would hold a public input period before any sale and might retain 10 acres for a state historical park preserving a flag pole fire pit and a stone 1860 marker while noting the rest may be privately owned if sold
