Franklin County Dairy Herd Improvement Association Records Look at Milk Output
Dairymen in Franklin County use DHIA records started around 1930 to measure milk production and profitability. Supervisors weigh milk, test samples, and compile monthly totals for each cow, creating six lactation summaries and a herd genealogy. In 1961 the Wilson herd averaged 13,190 pounds of milk with 3.6 butterfat from 33 cows, among national averages of 11,032 pounds and 4.26 butterfat per cow across 32794 herds.
