Conserving nitrogen with gypsum and phosphate in livestock housing
Farmers in gypsum and phosphate areas should broadcast gypsum or phosphate daily in dairy barns feed yards and poultry houses to conserve nitrogen. Apply rates per 1000 pounds of livestock and prevent urine reaction products from contacting animal feet. Nitrogen costs 18 cents a pound and 45 percent of manure nitrogen is lost as gas, with supplies tighter due to higher war demand for explosives.
