Origins and evolution of the Christmas carol in church use
The term carol originally described ring dances with lyrics sung to dance tunes. Christian clergy opposed dancing and secular songs, yet carols persisted, surviving longest in Shrove Tuesday dances. By 1521 printed carols appeared in England, including the Boar's Head carol performed at Oxford.
