Peaceful Harvest Horses Work The George Porter Farm
On his eighty year old Franklin county farm George Porter continues horse powered farming with 496 acres including 150 to 160 under cultivation. He raised 14 children, three died, and the remaining help with plowing planting and threshing. The family uses a John Deere binder and a wagon driven by horses to bring in shocks of grain to the threshing area. No electricity or telephone serves the home, though a transistor radio exists, and the operation is all land and labor powered by horses.
