At West Side High a nursery observation project runs Tuesdays and Thursdays for three hours. Freshman girls manage a home economics unit while senior students handle life management. About 18 children attend as observers record growth, play with textured toys, and assess development under instructor Mrs Mark Hammond.
Five week Idaho Days celebration set in Franklin county features Idaho Pioneer Day in Franklin around June 24 and Preston rodeo events. The calendar lists Pioneer Day July Fourth celebrations ward and class reunions and family gatherings to attract visitors while honoring Franklin’s pioneer history. Local groups will sponsor activities and invitational meets to promote the county and its oldest white settlement and birthplace of Idaho.
A new history book by Helen Gee Woods titled The Upper High m speek covers Preston life at century’s turn. It blends autobiography with local lore including John Inn and Lysander Gee, Mr Winn and his two families, and Woods’s perspective as the central narrator.
Prince Zogi famed as Thurston Blackstone and Houdini successor brings novelty acts hypnotism and illusions to Preston Golf and Country Club sponsored show at the high school auditorium. Doors open 7 p.m. and show starts 7 30 p.m. Tickets for adults and students available at the door.
The annual Franklin Stake Play will be presented Monday and Tuesday in the Preston high school auditorium. Directed by Mrs. Don Pack, with Victor Dunkley and Mrs. Nahum Porter assisting, the production is open to the public. Specific ward attendees are listed for Monday and Tuesday.
A quarterly conference event is planned at the stake center in Richmond this Sunday. Organizers emphasize a focused program and community gathering at the stake facility.
National Library Week will be celebrated in Preston with special displays at the Preston Library. A film about Library Week circulates among civic groups, and a Fine Arts club meeting used the theme. Each member brought a guest and guests received complimentary library cards to check out one book. Women toured library facilities.
William Hollingsworth, county crusade chair, announced area leaders for the Franklin county Cancer Crusade in Preston and surrounding communities. The drive runs through the month with Elizabeth Johnson heading the business section and numerous ward and town volunteers listed, including Glenn Smith, Dale Ralphs, Douglas Fisher, Loy al Hansen, Ted Paskins, Marvin Hollingsworth, Lynhall Merrill, Angus Candle, Blaine Davis, William Andrea, Allen Fisher, Alden Drury, Richard Bailiff Winder, Perry Phillips, Harold Baird, Alan Hampton, and others.
Amalgamated Sugar district manager Dale Strong warned local leaders that the industry could slip from Cache Valley if acreage does not recover. He said it may take years to restore optimal beet acreage and that low production would hurt both the plant and future acreage limits. Eldon Bingham noted local methods lag by about five years, as officials pledged efforts to boost harvest tonnage.
Preston will hold a citywide cleanup April 17 to 21 with trucks collecting debris from curbs. Ivan Davis is named recreation director again, overseeing all activities except swimming. A caretaker for the park and an assistant are to be hired, with applications at city hall. A delegation urged more parking behind Foss Furniture and the bank, involving Rotary club members and council discussion.
The Franklin District scouts plan another park cleanup at Preston City park after weather canceled the first attempt. They meet at 8 a.m. behind Preston Library with 300+ boys expected and plan a noon Wiener roast at the city recreation park barbeque pit. Kern leads cleanup. Malcolm Denton chairs the overall activity with district committee support.
West Side Parent Teachers association will elect officers for the coming year at a Friday meeting led by president Mrs Thane Winward. The 8 p.m. session in Porter Hall is open to all parents and teachers. A skit titled No Suit For Bill will be presented by Mrs Carl A Mortensen’s home room students. Refreshments will follow, with Mrs Lee Schwaneveldt in charge.
A life size Resusi Ann resuscitation doll will be available for demand and lessons until April 22. It is being used in the physical education classes of junior and senior highs in both districts. Scout masters and group leaders may use the doll in the evenings or times when available, by contacting the Yarn Bureau or Mrs Gaziel Meek at the listed address.
Amalgamated Sugar Co. said an interim sugarbeet payment of 85 cents per ton will be mailed to more than 500 farmers in northern Utah and southeastern Idaho by this weekend. The payout adds to the already processed 1966 sugarbeet crop and mirrors the spring 1965 interim payout.
