Bergland allows aide to discuss Imperial Valley farm issues
Agriculture Secretary Bergland said he permitted Assistant Secretary Robert Meyer to discuss the Imperial Valley water problem with officials as a private citizen and not as policy. The aide’s contacts drew scrutiny amid a court ruling limiting irrigation water to farms under 160 acres. Meyer, a California grower with interest in the valley, said discussions were private and boundary lines were observed. Bergland directed a USDA study on California water regulations and stressed no policy conflicts, noting Meyer would not be blocked from future information.
