County seeks federal aid to test auto air bags
Los Angeles County officials on Tuesday urged a federal grant to fund testing of air bag effectiveness in reducing fatal crashes. Supervisor Kenneth Hahy proposed buying 14 cars with air bags for county use to gauge practicality, noting DOT estimates that passive restraints could save 9,000 lives yearly and prevent many injuries. He recalled former Supervisor Burton Chace, who died in a 1972 crash, suggesting an air bag might have changed his fate.
