Proposition 18 sparks church leaders anger on censorship ballot
A group of religious figures including a Catholic priest a rabbi and a Unitarian minister denounce Proposition 18 a November 1 ballot measure aimed at censoring hard core pornography while sponsors led by Senator John Harmer defend the plan saying it targets explicit material not nudity or literature. Support comes from law enforcement and business groups though prominent Democrats oppose it. The measure would shift censorship standards to local communities and ban explicit nude scenes in film and magazines. In a separate ruling the Automobile Club of Southern California was cleared of wrongdoing in contributing 22000 to defeat Prop 18 in 1970, with court noting proper authorization and member communications.
