Sacramento officials warn growers they face court action for blocking union organizers from fields under a new farm labor elections law. The Agriculture Labor Relations Board pledges injunctions for violations, while a Supreme Court review looms. Separately, Cesar Chavez's UFW wins an uncontested election to represent 96 workers at a San Joaquin Valley farm, expanding its lead over the Teamsters in California.
In heavy fog a 30 foot sailboat with a value of 35000 ran aground off Point Foramin. Lifeguards rescued a family of three David Pearson 54 from Glendale his wife and son Craig 19 after rescuers climbed a cliff to reach them. All were uninjured. The boat was hauled off shore near Mossy Rock by Baywatch Cabrillo and towed to San Pedro. Damage was extensive below the waterline and it had taken on water.
In Sacramento, Lynette Fromme, charged with attempting to assassinate President Ford, is ruled fit to defend herself. Chief Judge Tomas MacBride says she can knowingly waive counsel, with federal defender E Richard Walker acting as co-counsel for the trial starting November 4.
