In a preliminary hearing U S magistrate David Holland dismissed the charge against Mrs Rose Liggett of Montana for harboring Dale Morris, the Mississippi jail escapee and murder defendant. The court ruled insufficient evidence for probable cause. two witnesses invoked the Fifth Amendment. Goudelock, charged similarly, was ordered moved to Montana for trial. Morris pleaded guilty to reduced manslaughter in Bay St Louis.
U S District Judge Sylvester J Ryan set October 1 for the wiretap conspiracy trial of James R Hoffa vice president and IBT presidential hopeful. Two co defendants indicted with him are scheduled for the same trial period. Hoffa expressed confidence he would win the IBT presidency at the Miami Beach meeting.
In Visalia area two hunters wounded after a dispute over a pack horse during a rifle fray. John Martin 25 Exeter disarmed and held at a packing station then booked in Porterville for assault with a deadly weapon. Gene Estep 33 Springfield hospitalized for surgery. Bud Hauert 50 Porterville wounded in arm.
In Sacramento UI A a traffic related dispute in a shopping center parking lot led to gunfire. Larry Souza, 20, was shot in the leg. Edwin Merle Smith, 36, was arrested for assault with a deadly weapon. Smith, an electronics engineer, said he was backing out when Souza drove by and nearly hit his car. Witness Charles D Davis fainted on sight and was treated for a head bump.
