Nader urges new probe into Ford steering defect
Consumer advocate Ralph Nader urged Washington to reopen its probe into Ford steering failures that can cause loss of control. He urged extending the recall beyond 85,000 police cars to include about 4 million normal passenger vehicles with the same control arms, citing tests and records. The Highway Safety Bureau said 37 police and passenger cases were verified, while Ford and insurers questioned the scope and handling of the data. Nader said the department’s exclusion of regular cars was unsupportable and demanded immediate action.
