Trains Collision Kills Two In Colorado Head On

Two trainmen die and at least 18 people are injured in a daylight head on crash near Broomfield Colorado between a passenger train from Billings to Denver and a northbound freight. The wreck may have resulted from a misread freight schedule. Ambulances moved the injured to Colorado General Hospital.

Race Strife Fails at Van Buren High School

In Van Buren Arkansas eight Negro students returned to the troubled high school amid threats of a white walkout that did not occur. Mild demonstrations were noted as students arrived before classes started. At the nearby junior high four of five Negro students enrolled went to class without incident. Judge Miller refused to order enforcement of the district’s one year integration plan, leaving the situation unresolved.

Heart Attack Fatal to Judge in Church

Superior Court Judge Clarence B. Runkle aged 63 died after a heart attack Sunday in California Lutheran Hospital. Born in Los Angeles he graduated from USC Law School and practiced law here 34 years. Gov. Goodwin J Knight appointed him to the bench in 1953.

Endurance Record Set By Two Dallas Fliers

Two Dallas pilots Jim Heth and Bill Burkhart broke the world endurance record for light planes by flying 1,200 hours 16 minutes 30 seconds in a Cessna 172. They began Aug 2 at 7 p.m. and landed at 7:17 p.m. Aug 4 or later, with a crowd of over 1,000 greeting them. Burkhart, 33, runs an airplane brokerage. Heth, 26, plans aviation charter service.

President orders 20 percent cut in lead and zinc imports

Newfort R I President Eisenhower ordered a 20 percent reduction in lead and zinc imports to aid U S producers. In letters to Senate Finance and House Ways and Means chairmen he said the move is better than a tariff increase and more likely to yield lasting solutions for the domestic lead and zinc industry.

Earthquake reports from Saver and surrounding villages near Kermanshah and Karksar describe wrecked fuel depots and damaged airports.
