Senate curtails enlisted stewards for top brass
The Senate voted 78 to 9 to sharply cut the use of enlisted stewards serving generals and admirals, slashing assignments from 1,245 to 218. Sen. Proxmire proposed eliminating or sharply reducing aides, arguing four star leaders earn enough to hire servants, with four and five star chiefs limited to fewer aides and lower ranks receiving none. The move follows a Defense Department cut in enlist ed aides and new guidelines barring personal tasks.
