Ellington in Leningrad Jazz Tour Praised by Tass Critics
Duke Ellington and his orchestra completed five nights in Leningrad at Oktyabrsky Hall on a month long tour, impressing Tass with virtuoso instrumentation and rare improvisation. The band then moved to Minsk while critics hailed their performances for communicating the soul of the Negro people to Soviet audiences. Westley Massey 90, crossing guard for Kansas City schools since 1941, helped about 200 children and said he will stay on the job as long as allowed. Dr Paul Dudley White, noted Boston heart specialist, was honored at a Peking dinner with other American doctors visiting Communist China.
