Justice Dept study on political motive trials ordered
Attorney General William B. Saxbe orders a Justice Department study of trials where defendants claim political motives. Deputy Atty. Gen. Silberman cites the Wounded Knee case and others, as well as Ellsberg’s Pentagon Papers case, to learn how to better handle such prosecutions without assigning blame. The study follows the May dismissal of Means and Banks case and potential appeals. President Ford signs a bill letting the State Department raise passport fees from $2 to cover costs.
