Stiffer Pollutant Limits Adopted by Air Board

Sacramento reports the California Air Resources Board approved new controls on pollutants including oxides, carbon monoxide, hydrogen sulfide, and nitrogen dioxide. The rules lower limits for oxides to 12 parts per million over one hour and reduce carbon monoxide tolerance to 20 parts per million over eight hours. The action follows a sixth public hearing and aims to prevent eye irritation and related health effects.

Smog Curb Proposals Attacked as Inadequate by Citizen Group

A California citizen group derided proposed air pollution standards as insufficient. Mrs. Michael Levee of Stamp Owl Smog urged stricter limits on oxidants, carbon monoxide, sulfur dioxide, nitrogen oxides, and particulates, arguing that only zero irritation and no body impact are acceptable and that industry feasibility drives policy. Board member Ni Joseph Boyle criticized the standards as woefully inadequate, while James Stearns called them a first workable step, noting enforceable limits must reflect real tech feasibility.
