Treasurer Quits Job Under Fire

Harvey A Gardner 71 Orange County treasurer for 14 years resigned amid malfeasance charges from the 1956 Grand Jury citing habitual intoxication. He recommended J. Wile Carlisle be appointed to his $7,000-a-month post after Gardner’s retirement Oct 1. Gardner has been absent from work for months and is in a sanitarium. The 1836 Grackerness charges were not pursued due to no law on time in office. District attorney called no case. Appointment pending vote. Carlisle’s selection delayed but expected soon. Actress Rhea Mitchell found strangled in Los Angeles home

American Income Up One Billion in August

Government data show personal income in August at an adjusted annual rate of 347.3 billion dollars, up from July by 1.0 billion. Wages and salaries boosted most of the rise, with gains in proprietors’ income and dividends offset by small declines in construction and mining. Nonagricultural income rose to 331.3 billion and agricultural income increased to 16 billion.
