Navy 600-ship goal seen as unrealisric by study
A study prepared for Congress by Members of Congress for Peace through Law urges reevaluating the Navys long range plan. It says the 600 ship fleet by the mid 1980s is unlikely and that even with huge budget increases the Navy would fall about 100 ships short. Rep. Les Aspin releases the Sunday report arguing a stabilizing fleet near 480 ships is more plausible. A Pentagon spokesman disputes the claims, noting national security objectives and costs.

Navy ship plan questioned by re examined study
A study questions the Navy plan to build 600 ships and argues the goal of 800 ships by 1980s may be unfeasible if current construction continues. It suggests the Navy could alter ship types and emphasize smaller, conventionally powered vessels.
