First well preserved Phoenician ship found near Marsala
An English expedition led by Honor Wrost announced the discovery of the first well preserved Phoenician warship in the Mediterranean. The 1000 by 17 foot vessel, buried in sand off Marsala in western Sicily, may have been part of Carthage's fleet defeated at the Battle of the Egadi Islands in 242 B.C. Carpenters' marks suggest prefab construction.
