Deukmejian bill aims to jail more drunk drivers

Senate bill by Sen. George Deukmejian moves to curb judges dropping prior drunken driving convictions as it advances to the Assembly. It would cut mandatory second-offense jail time to 48 hours plus a 250 dollar fine and require written justification if a prior conviction is dropped. License suspension for a year remains. Assemblyman Alan Sicarly argues the tougher stance will reduce California's 2,500 annual drunken driving deaths.
