Birthday Night Fright At Betty Lou James Home
A faded Los Angeles area vignette describes Betty Lou James planning a Friday 13th birthday party with a Gothic theme. Guests arrive as a black cat appears, promising a spooky night amid superstitions and local oddities including a flag display on Pomona Avenue and a 20th wedding anniversary celebration on Lee Street. The piece weaves incidents of curious neighbors, a stalking car in Long Beach, and Scout hikes near Camp Tahquitz into a collage of small-town tension and holiday atmosphere.

Fallout from Nevada tests accounts for little of California’s increased exposure, and efforts to minimize exposure include safer X-ray use and rural therapeutic devices. The gathering, featuring chemists, biologists and physicists, emphasized balancing risks with environmental factors in daily life.
