NY Police Convict Named to Head NY Department Posts
Detroit reform-minded officer Pat Murphy, 50, named to lead New York City police department operations replacing Howard Leary. Murphy, previously in Washington and Syracuse, will take the $41,000 annual post Oct. 1 after Leary resigned to join Abraham & Strauss security. Murphy arrived from Detroit after resigning there.

U S Tanker Collision With Soviet Freighter in Gulf
In the Pere sian Gulf the American owned tanker Aquarius collided with the Soviet freighter Sveflogorsk off Muscat Oman. Captain Abner Shalman said one crew member is missing and a Soviet ship is aiding tow to the 214,000 ton tanker which was carrying crude oil from Kharg Island bound for Capetown. The collision occurred in fog with limited visibility.
