Malpractice bill sent to governor despite many fees
California legislators move a malpractice bill to the governor aimed at tighter physician licensing and disciplinary powers. It would shorten the malpractice suit period to three years and cap non economic awards at 250000, while limiting attorney fees to 10 percent above 200000. Critics warn constitutionality and patient rights risks. A Van Nuys cardiologist cites looming 500 percent premium hikes for young doctors, urging insurance reform instead.
