California schools see growing racial imbalance study says
California's largest school system shows more predominantly Black and Mexican American schools this year than two years ago despite desegregation efforts in large districts. The state survey notes 150,000 Black students, about 37 percent, attended schools last spring that were 90 percent or more Black. It also records a rise in imbalanced schools from 1,021 to 1,105 and a slight drop in overall minority student share from 24.9 to 24.1 percent.

State board rejects racist textbooks in California
SACRAMENTO UPD A group of social science texts for grades five through eight was rejected by the State Board of Education after charges of racism. Critics cited passages likening malaria mosquitoes to Mexicans and other stereotypes. The board urged revisions, noting no current book meets all objections and that future writers must address minority contributions.
