Booby Trap Toll Surfaces in Vietnam War Deaths

Pentagon sources suggest as many as half of the 43,000 American deaths in Vietnam may be caused by booby traps, with officials noting records are imperfect. The breakdown cites 17,000 by small arms, 8,000 by fragmentation, 3,000 in crashes, and 6,500 to mines and booby devices, including 2,600 of 10,717 Marines. Senator Cranston echoes the claim, saying many deaths came from locals rather than front line troops. He cites Pentagon figures and unnamed aides who decline to detail further.
