Los Alamitos Police Chief Faces Frustrating Year of Challenge
Roy J. Kundtz, Los Alamitos police chief, completes a trying 12 months since taking command on Oct. 22, 1968. He tackled department discontent, updated the Penal Code, restored training, and won a 1 percent across the board pay raise to boost morale. He opted to keep the .45 caliber service weapon despite widespread concerns, citing safety and prior officer shootings in other cities. The force, with 21 full-time personnel, saw only one departure for family reasons amid major reorganizations.
