DeHaven to Join L B Destroyers
The USS DeHaven, first of four destroyers rehabilitated in San Francisco, is set to join Destroyer Squadron Nine at Long Beach Naval Station. Commanded by Capt. W. Calhoun Singletary, it has a crew of 14 officers and 200 enlisted men and underwent a seven month, four million dollar refit adding torpedo tubes, a helicopter hangar, depth sonar, upgraded electronics, and a larger superstructure. Its dedication follows open house events and the opening of a new 55,000 square foot facility replacing Pier A. The ship carries a helicopter and drone helicopter program advancing to flight operations with the carrier. The DeHaven’s service and facility dedication reflect postwar naval modernization efforts in California.
