Jet X7 Ram Jet Flies At Four Times Speed Of Sound
The Air Force disclosed that Lockheed X7 ram jet missile flashed past sound barrier at over four times the speed of sound, becoming the fastest air-breathing missile in the free world. Built by Lockheed Missils Systems Division in Van Nuys, it also set an altitude record for ramjet craft, though exact height was not released. The record flight overheated engine parts as heat burned away some ram jet sections after air-drops from a modified B-50 over a desert test range at Holloman AFB.
