Double killer Kirschke bids for release
Long Beach figure Jack Kirschke, imprisoned since 1967 for murdering his wife and her boyfriend, appeared in Los Angeles Superior Court seeking habeas corpus relief. He disputes police criminalist DeWayne Wolfer’s testimony, cites an evidentiary hearing set for Oct 2, and argues his five-year confinement is unjust while detailing his prison routine and plans after release.

Newport Beach pilot parachutes to safety after sea crash
A Newport Beach race pilot, Larry Havens, bailed out of a smoking Bell P-63 King Cobra two miles west of Seal Beach as the plane disintegrated and sank. Coast Guardsmen and an oil island launch rescued him amid heavy swells, after he ditched near 290 mph flight at 6,000 feet. Havens, 46, planned to race in Reno next week and credited the island crew and nearby light-plane pilot Arthur Peterson with the timely rescue.

The maritime investigation found strong evidence of negligence in the Titanic's operation. Full speed despite iceberg warnings, no bow lookout, and delayed radio watch contributed to the disaster, with 1,500 lives lost. Lifeboat space and 24 hour radio watch became later maritime requirements.
