Gas price ceilings face court approval and rollbacks
The government sets new price ceilings for gasoline and diesel, prompting dealers to cut prices as ceilings take effect. Consumers may file complaints with the IRS if they suspect overcharges or incorrect octane ratings. Exxon and Atlantic Richfield raised wholesale gasoline by one cent, a cost retailers must absorb. The council guarantees retailers a minimum markup over August 1 wholesale costs, with higher markups for those with larger margins, while rollbacks could shave 1 to 3 cents off many prices.
