Alabama Legislature backs Wallace disobedience plan for school choice
The Alabama Legislature endorsed George C. Wallace’s civil disobedience guidance urging parents to enroll children in schools of their choice and remain there. The Senate vote was 23 to 11 and the House 85 to 4, calling the plan the lawful and least disruptive method amid federal desegregation orders. Brewer, Wallace’s rival, avoided a strong position while noting his candidacy. Public schools reopened with few incidents and Floyd Mann reported only minor flareups statewide.

President fires Northern District marshal in 1969 shakeup
San Francisco UPI reports President Nixon dismissed Louis H. Martin, the 52 year old United States Marshal for the Northern District of California, replacing him with George G. Tobin. Martin protested, noting the move followed a controversial letter from Deputy Atty. Gen. Richard Kleindienst on White House stationery. The court left Martin in place temporarily as the executive decision unfolded.
